Professional Development for Engineers

Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals

Most engineering professionals in Canada require Professional Development hours to maintain their professional designation. Browse courses that meet your requirements, or choose one of our course packages, specially curated to contain all the hours and credits you need, in one place. The courses on LearnFormula may be counted towards professionally relevant, verifiable learning activities. It is the student's responsibility to validate whether an activity is an eligible educational activity for their professional development requirements based on their own learning needs.

Your program should be designed to address any required knowledge and skills maintenance, or improvement, as well as acquisition of new abilities that contribute to your personal and professional growth in accordance with your career goals.
The program defines six (6) activity categories and indicates the minimum levels of effort required to meet the program recommendations in each category. These required levels of effort are defined by units referred to as Professional Development Hours (PDH’s). Accumulation of a total of 240 PDH’s is recommended over a three-year period.
A maximum of 30 PDHS each year can be earned in the category Formal Activity.

Members have to claim 80 CPD annually of which 40 can be claimed through courses. Every 20 hours of professional work activity qualify as one (1) PDH. The member may claim a maximum of 50 total PDHs per year for this activity. Professional work in one’s area of practice is a significant factor in demonstrating competence. Most members directly practice engineering or manage the direct practice of engineering. Some members may be working in management positions in organizations where engineering is a factor, but they may not be directly managing engineering.

Formal Education Every one (1) hour of activity qualifies as one (1) PDH. For courses offering recognized Continuing Education Units (CEUs), one (1) CEU equals ten (10) PDHs. The member may claim a maximum of 40 PDHs per year for this activity. Formal education activities include structured courses or programs that may be for credit and should have an evaluation process. Formal education activities may include but are not limited to: - Professional development programs, courses and seminars. - Courses offered by universities, technical institutes, colleges, suppliers, employers and technical societies. - Courses offered in traditional classroom settings, by correspondence, video or online. - Courses that expand one’s technical skills (ex. software) or workplace certifications (ex. safety). Refresher courses or certification renewals are not eligible activities.

The PEAK program is designed to help PEO licence holders (both practising and non-practising) remain competent as engineers through completion of the continuing professional development program’s three elements: practice evaluation, ethics module and continuing knowledge declaration. Continuing professional development for licence holders is in keeping with PEO’s regulatory, public protection mandate as set out in the Professional Engineers Act.

Mandatory CPD program coming January 2023
Beginning in January 2023, PEO is launching a mandatory continuing professional development (CPD) program based on its current, optional Practice Evaluation and Knowledge (PEAK) program. As of January 2023, all PEO licence holders (both practising and non-practising) will be required to comply with the program. The existing, voluntary PEAK program will be discontinued as PEO transitions towards the mandatory CPD program.

Admissible CPD
A CPD activity will be deemed admissible for the program if the learning content covered by the activity is intended to help the licence holder reduce their professional practice risks. Specifically, the activity must meet these criteria:
  1. Be aimed at helping the licence holder maintain their competence to practise professional engineering;
  2. Be directly relevant to their engineering practice area(s);
  3. Be sufficiently technical or regulatory in nature; and
  4. Be different from their professional practice work.
A licence holder will choose CPD activities that meet admissibility criteria as well as their preferred learning format. In other words, the program will recognize all learning formats equally: from instructor-led to self-paced activities; from in-person to virtual activities; from locally-led to globally-led activities; and from no-cost to paid activities. Learning formats include engaging in self-paced study or reading, attending a seminar or a course, delivering a lecture or presentation, developing engineering guidelines, or participating in technical mentoring.
