The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) serves as a national accreditor of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for engineering learning activities across Canada. The EIC does not impose mandatory CPD requirements on engineers. Instead, it establishes standards for accrediting professional development activities delivered by approved providers.

EIC-CEU Definition:

  • One EIC-CEU = 10 hours of participation in a formal continuing education program.
  • Each CEU is equivalent to 10 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).
  • CEUs may be issued in decimal increments for shorter activities.

Accreditation Standards:
Learning activities accredited by the EIC must comply with rigorous program standards, including:

  • Clear learning outcomes developed through a needs assessment.
  • Qualified instructors responsible for content delivery.
  • Instructional methods appropriate to stated objectives.
  • Verification of learning outcomes through testing, demonstrations, or evaluations.
  • Participant evaluations to measure effectiveness.
  • Responsible sponsorship and administration of the course.

Accredited Providers:
Organizations accredited as EIC Participating Partners may issue EIC-accredited CEUs/PDHs. Accredited providers are required to register issued CEUs/PDHs with the EIC Registry, enabling professionals to securely maintain a national transcript of continuing education achievements.

EIC’s Continuing Education Accreditation Program is endorsed by Engineers Canada, the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

LearnFormula is an EIC Participating Partner (Quality CEU Provider) authorized to issue EIC-accredited CEUs and PDHs. For full information, please visit: https://eic-ici.ca/eic_ceu-standards/

OIQ Continuing Education Requirements (English)

Engineers registered with the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) must complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years. The reference cycle runs from April 1 (odd year) to March 31 (odd year).

Recognized activities include: attending a workshop, course, conference, seminar (including as trainer); structured individual support such as mentoring (up to 10 hours per cycle, including as mentor); published writing (article or book); participation in a community of practice or technical committee as part of a structured process; self-directed learning (up to 10 hours per cycle); and preparing a professional development plan (up to 1 hour per cycle). Where an activity includes an evaluation, it must be passed for the hours to count.

Monitoring & records: By April 15 following each reference period, engineers must submit a continuing education declaration listing activities, nature, date, hours, and trainer (if applicable). Supporting documents must be kept for 2 years after the end of the reference period. The OIQ may refuse recognition of an activity or hours based on content relevance, educational framework, documentation quality, attendance/evaluation records, and compliance with regulatory objectives. A review may be requested within 15 days; a review committee decides within 60 days and its decision is final.

Notes: Eligible topics cover all aspects of engineering practice (technical, law, management, ethics, communications). The Board of Directors may impose specific mandatory training (e.g., set durations, minimum hours by subject, specify recognized activities/trainers, impose deadlines).
