CPD Requirements for OACETT

Members of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) must complete 30 hours of CPD over each three-year cycle to maintain certification. The cycle runs January 1 to December 31 every three years.

Requirements:

• A minimum of 30 hours of CPD must be completed each cycle.
• At least 15 hours must be Active Learning, with the remainder (up to 15 hours) eligible as Passive Learning.
• Active Learning involves structured, participatory engagement with measurable outcomes. This includes classroom training, instructor-led online courses, mentorship programs, examinations/certifications, professional courses, structured workplace training, and recorded courses that include an assessment component.
• Passive Learning refers to informal, self-directed activities without structured assessment. Examples include professional reading, pre-recorded webinars or lectures without interaction, podcasts, case studies, or on-the-job experiential learning. Passive Learning is capped at 15 hours per cycle, with no more than 10 hours from reading/podcasts/online media.
• Non-eligible activities include WHMIS, First Aid, CPR, AODA, basic IT refreshers, repeated activities within the same cycle, incomplete courses, or paid teaching as part of regular employment.

Accreditation & Eligibility:

• OACETT does not accredit CPD providers. Members may select activities that are relevant to their technical practice, professional role, or development goals.
• Active Learning requires structured delivery with defined objectives, assessments, or interactive participation. Passive Learning does not require assessment and is self-paced.
• Volunteer teaching or presenting technical content may qualify for CPD credit if unpaid.

Recording, Reporting, and Audit:

• All CPD activities must be logged in the OACETT online portal, including activity details (title, provider, category, hours, description) and supporting documentation.
• Acceptable evidence includes attendance certificates, transcripts, employer confirmations, written summaries, or presentation materials.
• Members must retain records throughout the cycle.
• OACETT conducts annual random audits of the previous three-year cycle. Members selected for audit must provide all records within the specified timeframe. Non-compliance may result in loss of certification.
