About This Course

This course shows civil engineers how to move from one time answers to reusable firm assets using four Claude capabilities: Skills, Projects, Artifacts, and Design. Working through realistic scenarios from the Maple Creek Bridge Replacement Project, participants learn how Skills capture firm expertise, such as a scour review methodology or a daily field report standard, in a declarative format any team member can trigger. Projects create persistent workspaces grounded in project documents, turning a folder built for storage into a workspace built for asking. Artifacts produce interactive calculators, dashboards, and tools that teams actually use. Design produces polished decks, sites, and visuals that help small firms present at the level of large firms. The course also addresses governance questions these capabilities raise, including who curates a Project, whether artifacts count as deliverables or work product, and how captured expertise preserves institutional knowledge when senior engineers retire. Every output remains a draft for review by a licensed engineer.

Topics Covered:

  • Claude Skills: Capturing Firm Expertise in Reusable Form
  • Skills Versus Projects: The How and the Where
  • Claude Projects: Persistent Workspaces Grounded in Project Documents
  • Document Interrogation: Timelines, Contradictions, Gaps, and Commitments
  • Claude Artifacts: Interactive Calculators, Dashboards, and Field Tools
  • Claude Design: Polished Decks, Sites, and Visuals on Demand
  • Knowledge Retention, Governance, and Professional Accountability

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how Skills, Projects, Artifacts, and Design differ and when each applies.
  • Identify firm procedures and senior expertise worth capturing as reusable Skills.
  • Apply Project instructions to produce consistent, cited outputs across a team.
  • Analyze full document sets for timelines, disagreements, missing records, and unmet commitments.
  • Evaluate interactive artifacts as engineering tools, deliverables, or work product.
  • Assess governance, curation, and confidentiality obligations for shared AI workspaces.
  • Develop a plan to preserve retiring engineers' knowledge as firm infrastructure.

Who Will Benefit/Target Audience:

This course is designed for civil engineers, project engineers, project managers, engineers in training, technologists, and firm leaders across structural, geotechnical, transportation, municipal, and construction practice who want to understand and apply Claude to improve productivity, accuracy, documentation, and decision support.

Prerequisite Knowledge:

No prior experience with Claude is required; however, familiarity with basic Claude chat use and common civil engineering project documents will be beneficial.
